BBC Highlights Vast Iran Suppression

Iran launched a campaign against rap music, saying illegal recording studios would be closed and rap singers “confronted,” according to a BBC report. Farsi rap music is increasingly popular, with lyrics covering political, social and sexual themes.

According to a separate BBC report, thousands of Iranian women have been cautioned over their poor Islamic dress this week. Several hundred women were arrested in Tehran in a fierce crackdown on what’s known as “bad hijab.”

One last BBC story notes that 181 students have received letters from the government warning them not to get involved in politics, while 47 student publications and 28 student organisations have been closed in the last year.

The BBC often apologizes for Muslim extremism and repression. This grouping of Iran reports, however, is well worth a read.
